Klaviyo: Added to Cart & next pick

Added to Cart, for abandoned-cart flows

A cart drawer can add to the cart in a way Klaviyo's own tracking misses, and then an Added to Cart flow goes quiet. Luv Cart sends Klaviyo's standard Added to Cart event itself whenever a shopper adds to the cart, from your product pages or the drawer, upsells included (free gifts are left out). Each event carries the product added, its price, image and link, the cart's value, every item in the cart, and a link back to the cart.

Set it up

  1. Make sure Klaviyo's onsite tracking is on for your store. Klaviyo's Shopify integration adds it as an app embed in your theme; Luv Cart sends through it, so there's no key or script to add.
  2. In Luv Cart, open Integrations and turn on Added to Cart. It's on by default.
  3. Test it: add something to your cart in a browser where Klaviyo knows you (for example after clicking one of your own emails), then look for Added to Cart in your profile's activity in Klaviyo.

Klaviyo records the event for shoppers it can identify, such as people who have clicked one of your emails or signed up on your site. If another app or your theme already sends Added to Cart, turn one of them off so each add is counted once.

Use it in an abandoned-cart flow

  1. In Klaviyo, go to Flows → Create flow, build from scratch, and choose the trigger Metric: Added to Cart.
  2. Add the flow filter Placed Order zero times since starting this flow. If you also run a checkout-abandonment flow, add Started Checkout zero times since starting this flow too, so a shopper only gets one of the two.
  3. Add a time delay (a few hours is typical), then an email.
  4. In the email, show what they left behind with the event's details:
{% for item in event.Items %}
  <img src="{{ item.ImageURL }}" alt="{{ item.ProductName }}" width="120">
  <p>{{ item.ProductName }} × {{ item.Quantity }}</p>
{% endfor %}
<a href="{{ event.CheckoutURL }}">Back to your cart</a>

For a simpler block, the event also carries AddedItemProductName, AddedItemImageURL, AddedItemURL, AddedItemPrice, AddedItemQuantity and $value (the cart's value).

Next pick on each customer's profile

When a customer orders, Luv Cart can write the product they're most likely to buy next, from your Bought together data, to their Klaviyo profile. A post-purchase email can then recommend a real product chosen for that customer.

Set it up

  1. In Klaviyo, create a private API key with Accounts: Read and Profiles: Full access (or Write).
  2. In Luv Cart, open Integrations, paste the key and turn on Next pick. The key is checked straight away and stored encrypted, and it's never shown again.

The profile properties

A sample flow block

In a flow triggered by Placed Order, add a time delay of a few days and a conditional split on luv_next_pick_title is set, then use this block in the email on the "yes" path:

{% if person|lookup:'luv_next_pick_title' %}
  <a href="{{ person|lookup:'luv_next_pick_url' }}">
    <img src="{{ person|lookup:'luv_next_pick_image' }}" alt="{{ person|lookup:'luv_next_pick_title' }}" width="280">
  </a>
  <p>Customers who loved your last order also pick {{ person|lookup:'luv_next_pick_title' }}.</p>
  <a href="{{ person|lookup:'luv_next_pick_url' }}">Take a look</a>
{% endif %}

Keep a delay between the order and this email: the property is written when the order reaches Luv Cart, and the delay makes sure it's there.

Which plans: the Klaviyo integration is part of Starter and Grow. During early access every store has it.
